She never really understood what it was like for me.

We're lying together in her one bedroom apartment. It's dark except for the streetlights illuminating the room. I sigh and she rolls over to look at me, she knows something is wrong, yet she doesn't speak. I stare at the ceiling memorizing every little crack and plastic star she's stuck up there. I never understood why she was afraid of the dark, why she needed that reassurance.

The wind was blowing her hair on my shoulder and I could feel her eyes studying me as every tear drop fell on her flowered pillowcase. She started saying something but the sound of a car passing muffled her soft voice. I decided to roll over and look her in the eyes.

"I just can't do this anymore; it doesn't feel right."
"It will never feel right, but we need each other."
"There is no place in this world for people like you and me, except in each others arms."

So I sighed and went back to starring at the ceiling, but this time I didn't cry. There were no more tears left, only the meaningless love that she gave me.

I couldn't sleep....and this little story played in my head.
